Donkeys were important pack animals in Westphalia for a long time, especially for millers, who used them to transport grain and flour. The Brilon Nightingale breed is also well known – a donkey that was jokingly given this name in the Sauerland region because its loud “singing cries” filled the stables in the evenings and were reminiscent of the song of a nightingale. We keep two gray donkeys at the LWL-Museum Hellerlecht. Visitors can observe the animals next to the cap windmill (Kappenwindmühle) and experience the historical significance of donkeys.
